Rag Darbari : Shrilal Shukla

Rag Darbari is one of the most famous Hindi novels written by Shri Lal Shukla, an author known for his satire. The novel highlights the falling values present in the Indian society. It goes ahead to expose the helplessness of intellectuals against the strong nexus present between criminals, businessmen and politicians.

The novel is about Ranganath, a research student in history who visits his uncle in a village for a few months. He is surprised to learn how is uncle uses all the instruments of the society viz. the village school, the village panchayat (a local elected body), the local government offices etc for his selfishness. The moral values which he has learnt during his university education are considered completely useless and impractical.

This book, I love a lot.

Raag Darbari is undoubtedly the best satire ever written in hindi. Not to speak of any other author, Srilal Shukla himself could not surpass this work.

Since you seem to enjoy reading, may I recommend Saadat Hasan Manto and Krishan Chander. These were amongst the Urdu progressive writers club members and were the reason I got hooked to good literature when I was in school.

raag darbari is no doubt the best, but you can read Pehla Parav also by Shrilal Shukl. And read satires by Sharad Joshi.

I had heard from someone that Raag Darbari is one of the best satirical work ever produced in Hindi. After reading the book I can safely say that it can stand tall among the best satirical works produced in any language, not just Hindi. The humor is classy and effortless and not to mention 'BLACK'. If anyone visiting this blog has not already read it, it has to be at the top of his To Be Read list.

PS: Best enjoyed when served in Hindi:)

Perhaps you should read 'Baramasi' by Gyan Chaturvedi, that's also pretty good albeit not better.

an excellent satire. full of entertainment and also thought provoking at every page. a 'real' de-romanticized account of rural india (will b equally good for any backdrop). i still carry the helplessness of rangnath and the 'palayan sangeet' with me. readers of raag darbari shall also go for 'yatra tatra sarvatra' and 'yathasambhava' by Sri Sharad Joshi. and also 'Jahaalat ke pachaas saal' by Srilal Shukla.

No doubt Raag Darbari is one of the best in hindi literature but as far as satire is concerned I think Hari Shankar Parsai is the best. His comments are so harsh and always hit the bulls eye and with very very good humour too...

Hi all,

Raag Darbari and Baramasi are the best satire ever. I will also recommend "Khoya Pani" in hindi by mushtaq ahmad yusufi. Stories by hari shankar parsai are also worth reading.
